20 Places to Visit in the Lake District

There are so many different things to see and do in Cumbria so we’ve created a list of our 20 favourite places to visit in the Eden Valley and Lake District to help guide you! All of our Roundthorn team have given their recommendations on great places to visit during your stay with us in Cumbria – we hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
Ullswater Steamers –

Derwent –
Fantastic way to see the lakes from a different perspective – beautiful scenery.

Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway –
Even if you’re not a train lover, this was a great day out!

Whinlatter Forest & Go Ape –
This is such an exciting, active day out – the tarzan swing was the scariest bit but so pleased we did it!
Hutton-in-the-forest –
The historic house was stunning and we took a lovely walk around the gardens which are still surrounded by a medieval forest! You could spend all day exploring!

Lowther Castle –
A very well restored castle, lovely views, beautiful tearoom and an amazing adventure play castle!

Carlisle Castle –
We enjoyed the walk around the surroundings – walking distance from the city.

Dalemain –
Lovely walk around the gardens, beautiful flowers! Look out for its award winning Marmalade Festival and Paddington Bear!

Mirehouse –
A great outdoor day for families, lots of hidden play areas and obstacles and a lovely cafe for the grownups too!

Hadrian’s Wall – Vindolanda –
Wonderful artifacts and ruins, an awesome place to go if you’re interested in Roman era!

Muncaster Castle –
Such an interesting place to visit – so much history at Muncaster Castle and gorgeous gardens too! There’s interactive fun for children, mazes and they have the World Owl Centre too – we thought it was a great family day out!

Aira Force –
A fantastic walk with beautiful scenery – just perfect on a Summer’s day!

Birds of Prey Centre –
A great day out to see the amazing collection of hawks, falcons, eagles, vultures and owls from around the world! Make sure you treat yourself to a delicious homemade cake or scone in the tearoom.

Brockhole –
A fun day out for all ages – interactive exhibitions, Mawson gardens, adventure playground, shop and information centre!

Rookin House –
Good day out for activities –horse trekking, archery, go karting, paintballing and many more! Great for large groups and also fun for younger ones.

Walby Farm Park –
This is a fab family day out – so much to do and see, fun for all ages!

Lakes Aquarium –
Went on a wet day in the lakes and this was the perfect place for a day out.

Rheged –
Really worth a visit and very easy and accessible – lots of fun for all ages!

Beatrix Potter –
A must for anyone who has read Peter Rabbit! Fun and interactive – take your camera!

Theatre by the Lake –
So much choice of what to see. A cosy theatre and we took a lovely walk along the lake too.

Larch Cottage –
There’s an array of unusual plants in the nursery and Red Barn Gallery is like an Aladdin’s cave! Just perfect for a relaxed day strolling around the gardens!

Honister –
Lots to see and do! Adrenaline junkies – it is a must!

South Lakes Wild Animal Park –
A fantastic family day out! There’s something to see and do for everyone. We easily spent the whole day here. Great value!
